Flint Dental now offers 100% Mercury Free Dentistry. We use absoutely NO mercury containing products in the practice and offer safe amalgam (mercury containing filling) removal for you safety and confidence.

As a member of the “Mercury Free Dentistry Society”, this practice is aware of some “disquiet” regarding the use of mercury fillings. We are able to appraise your case with perhaps some X-rays and intra-oral video camera views to illustrate your case. A micro-ammeter can be used to measure and record the relative degree of corrosion and/or galvanic activity in the old amalgam restorations (metal fillings).  Then we can remove mercury containing fillings following strict health guidelines.

Mercury removal protocol - Old mercury fillings can be safely removed under carefully controlled circumstances and then replaced with (mercury-free) alternatives. To prevent inhalation of vapours/ aerosols a nose piece will be used to allow you to breathe positive pressure pure oxygen (O2) OR a Sedative mixture (O2 & N2O) adjusted to your preferred levels.

We also consider it essential to protect your eyes (with protective eyewear) and nose. We therefore utilise rubber dam protection - (a sheet of latex surrounding the tooth, isolating it from the rest of the mouth) during amalgam removal, using a high speed air rotor, with water on maximum and suitable suction to remove the amalgam material efficiently and avoid ingestion (swallowing).

After the safe removal of the amalgam fillings, there are a number of ways to re-restore teeth. The treatment choice depends on each case although metal-free materials are available for most restorative procedures including Fillings, Inlays, Onlays, Veneers, Crowns and Bridgework. In some circumstances gold can be considered due to its great track record and biocompatibility and we even offer partial dentures with gold framework/ clasps to reduce the problem of metal sensitivity.
